That isn't quite true - Jane Austen is Jane Austen with the gloves off - but Davies has brought an unexpected intensity, a genuine passion, to his adaptation of Wharton's novel of love, cruelty and guile in America's high society of the early 20th century. "They will forgive a woman almost anything except the loss of her good name." As Lily finds her credit in society running out, she turns to the resources she has left--or thinks she has--and we see finally that she is defeated. She is prepared for two things in life, to be a rich man's wife or to do piecework at poverty wages.

Everyone knows the truth about her--that she is not a bad woman but an admirable one--and yet no one will act on it, because perceptions are more important than reality. What finally defeats Lily Bart is her own lack of imagination, her inability to think outside the envelope she was born within.

Besides its Chinese pagoda design, the theatre’s most distinct feature is the famous Forecourt of the Stars, with nearly 200 celebrity handprints, footprints, and autographs immortalized in the concrete. Visitors can literally touch Hollywood history, from Marilyn Monroe to Tom Hanks, Betty Grable’s legs, Jimmy Durante’s nose, and the magic wands of Harry Potter’s heroic trio. A word that might best describe Mr. Davies's interpretation of Wharton's cruel novel of manners is Dickensian. The stone-and-marble mansions through which Wharton's socialites march like expressionless automatons have all the allure of shadowy mausoleums. Conversations tend to be stilted and punctuated with uncomfortable silences. As for period glamour, the doyennes of this society may wear the same accouterments as the great ladies in Sargent paintings, but they exude little of their magnetism and mystery.

This flexibility ensures that anyone, regardless of the size of their outdoor space, can partake in the joy of creating a fairy garden, inviting a sense of wonder and enchantment into their environment. If that’s not your style, fairy gardens can also be built in a small garden area surrounded by sunflowers, calendulas or even cosmos. In the middle of the flowers, there could be a spot to nestle in and read, or a bird bath or a gazing ball could be tucked inside the ring of flowers. If you love it, once you’ve finished building it, you can repeat the design every year.

Small dollhouse furniture sourced from thrift stores can serve as quaint additions to the garden. Recycled materials can be transformed into unique, handcrafted pieces, adding a personal touch to the fairy abode. These elements work together to create a scene that is both enchanting and environmentally conscious. Fairy gardens captivate the imagination, serving as miniature sanctuaries that offer a glimpse into a whimsical, enchanted world. These tiny landscapes are crafted to attract mythical fairy visitors, blending the allure of fantasy with the beauty of nature.

''The House of Mirth'' was shown as part of this year's New York Film Festival.

Strong performances, gorgeous costumes and sumptuous art direction distinguish this adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel. Gillian Anderson stars as a unmarried woman who falls from grace in early 20th-century New York City, where the upper classes have little use for an independent female who refuses to play by the rules. Eric Stoltz, Anthony LaPaglia, Laura Linney, Dan Aykroyd, Elizabeth McGovern. She goes to tea at Selden's house, and is seen leaving by Mr. Rosedale (Anthony LaPaglia).

She puts the check in an envelope she addresses to her bank, and writes another for Gus Trenor, resolving her massive debt, and then takes a fatal dose of the laudanum, drifting off to oblivion in her darkened room. Finding the partially-burnt letters in his fireplace and sensing her intentions, Selden rushes to her boarding room. There, at her deathbed, holding her hand, he weeps, declaring his love for her.

Lily's social world includes George and Bertha Dorset (Terry Kinney and Laura Linney). Bertha flaunts her infidelities, and George is too timid, or well-mannered, to rise to the bait. She all but insists Lily accompany them on their yacht in the Mediterranean, and then gets herself out of a tight spot by a subterfuge against Lily so cruel and unfair, it almost rips the fabric of the film. Lily almost confronts Bertha Dorset with the letters written to Mr. Selden, but finding that the Dorsets have left town, she goes to Lawrence Selden, telling him she knows she lost his love. When Lawrence is not looking, she throws the letters in his lit fireplace.

''The House of Mirth'' is, after all, Wharton's sustained howl of rage at a world where women are overwhelmingly dependent on men for their livelihoods and in which one malicious whisper can destroy a reputation. Lily is a victim, an old-fashioned sacrificial heroine undone in part by her own high principles, when she refuses to stoop to the blackmailing employed by her foes. Money rules, and anyone who doesn't catch on to that fact is a fool who deserves to learn the hard way. However amorous a high-powered match might be, there is also likely to be a business arrangement lurking under the bed covers.

Back in New York, the Dorsets are still in marital discord and Aunt Julia has died. Lily receives only a fraction of her vast fortune, the bulk having been left to her cousin Grace. Now homeless and adrift, Lily is invited by Carry Fisher to stay with her and the Gormers for the summer.

For a woman to go unaccompanied to a man's room is not proof she is a tramp, but might as well be. Rosedale guesses something of Lily's financial situation, and makes her an offer she refuses. So, too, in a different way, does Gus Trenor (Dan Aykroyd), playing one of those rich men who offer investment advice to desirable women as if they have only benevolence on their minds. A woman risks losing her chance of happiness with the only man she has ever loved.A woman risks losing her chance of happiness with the only man she has ever loved.A woman risks losing her chance of happiness with the only man she has ever loved.

But she projects none of the innate refinement necessary for Lily, who should mirror her name by embodying a rarefied mixture of delicacy, beauty and vivacious wit. In one crowd scene the director dresses her in bright red in contrast with everyone else's grays, blacks and muted greens. It's a cheap effect because Lily is not a scarlet woman (or even a rebel) in her own mind, and even those who tarnish her reputation know it. The film's austerity underscores Wharton's anger and disgust at the hypocrisy, cruelty and greed of the upper crust of her time.

house of mirth movie

Trenor tricks her into leaving the opera and accompanying him to his home, where he tries to kiss her, claiming that Lily is not playing a fair game when she accepts his money but refuses him her attentions. When Lily arrives home, her aunt refuses to lend her the money to repay the $9,000 she received from Trenor. Lily confides in Grace, asking if she should turn to Selden for his understanding, but Grace advises against it; Grace secretly loves Lawrence and is jealous of Lily. Lily had arranged a later appointment with Selden while at the wedding, and she counts on his love for her to overcome her foolish mistakes. Lily Bart is a beautiful but impoverished socialite accustomed to comfort and luxury. Along with her younger cousin, Grace Stepney, she lives with her wealthy aunt, Julia Peniston, who gives Lily a small allowance.

But if the styles of Dickens and Wharton don't align in terms of character portrayal, they do in their storytelling. Almost in spite of itself, ''The House of Mirth'' is powerful, at times even moving. The story of Lily's expulsion from the inner circle and her descent through failed jobs into abject poverty is a relentlessly tragic tale of bad luck, cruelty and missed opportunity. Although set nearly 100 years ago, it still sends a chill of recognition and dread. It's a worst possible scenario of bad things happening to a good person.

At a recent Shaun of the Dead Movie Party, guests received inflatable cricket bats so they could smack their neighbors every time Shaun (Simon Pegg) smacks a zombie on-screen, and a keepsake Shaun-esque name tag. With the exception of Laura Linney's chillingly spidery Bertha Dorset (the unfaithful wife who plots Lily's destruction), the other performances are surprisingly one-dimensional. Dan Aykroyd's Gus Trenor, a married man who pounces on Lily after duplicitously trying to buy her favors, is little more than a red-eyed lunging pig. Anthony LaPaglia, as Sim Rosedale, a financier and outsider who is cannily buying his way up the social ladder, comes the closest to breaking through a buttoned-up caricature. The most cartoonish performance is Eleanor Bron's as Lily's aunt, a woman so severe she makes the Wicked Witch of the West seem warm and cuddly. The movie's most glaring failure is its casting of Ms. Anderson as Lily.

They allow both the young and the young at heart to indulge in creative play and storytelling. And who knows, if you add a door, you might just find the fairies will visit your garden. As you embark on the adventure of creating your own fairy garden, remember that there are no strict guidelines, only suggestions to spark your creativity. Each fairy garden is as unique as its creator, and there’s no right or wrong way to bring it to life. It’s an opportunity to step away from screentime and connect with nature, share an activity with loved ones and craft a space that brings joy and a sense of wonder. There are nearly 40,000 movie screens in the U.S.; not all are created equally.

Just be warned, once you visit one, it may be hard to go back to your neighborhood multiplex. This outstanding film shows how masterly is Davies's visual sense and what a light, adroit touch he has turned out to have with "period" furniture and detail. It is a revelation to see how he has transformed the novelistic conventions of place and character with such tact, and the kind of sobriety and discretion that allows the cast to give vivid, attractive performances. The Landmark Nuart Theatre in West LA is a longtime showcase for independent film, foreign language cinema, documentaries, restored classics, and midnight movies as well as frequent in-person appearances and Q&A sessions with stars and filmmakers. Specs for the single screen include 4K DLP Digital Projection and 35mm Projection with 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound. Located on Wilshire Boulevard across from the Hammer Museum, IPIC Westwood features six screens and the theatre chain's signature dine-in-the-dark experience.

He offers to marry Lily once she and Bertha are reconciled, but Lily refuses. At a wedding, Lily receives a $5,000 check from Gus Trenor, who claims to have reinvested another $4,000. Later, he invites Lily to the opera, where she is seen by her disapproving aunt and Lawrence Selden as she sits with Trenor and Rosedale.

This makes them a versatile project for families, educators or anyone seeking a touch of magic or a bit of simple living in their lives. Admire the breathtaking scenery that has inspired the country’s most legendary writers, artists, and musicians. Photos have emerged of a 30-year-old man who jumped from a Carnival Cruise ship as it was sailing back towards port in Jacksonville. Meanwhile, Carnival said its care team is working to support the man’s family. A clip showed Hill jumping off the side of the boat about 95 miles off the coast of Melbourne. Carnival did not respond to questions regarding which man overboard-detection technologies are in place on board the Carnival Elation ship.

The cruise operator said it alerted authorities about the incident and was advised to proceed to its final stop in Jacksonville. In May, a Carnival passenger named Ronnie Peale went overboard the ship Magic and fell into the waters off Florida. The 855-foot Elation weighs nearly 72,000 tons and can carry nearly 2,200 guests, as well as 900 crew members, according to Fox 35 Orlando.

The Elation returned to Jacksonville's port in October 2022 after being previously deployed to Port Canaveral. That marked a return for the cruise ship, which ran out of Jacksonville in 2015. At 855 feet long, nearly 72,000 tons and staffed with 900 crewmembers, the Carnival Elation can carry nearly 2,200 guests. Surveillance video reportedly captured 30-year-old Jaylen Hill leaping over the railing of the Carnival Elation on Sunday afternoon off the coast of Melbourne, Florida. Carnival Cruise Line said the Elation was "advised to continue to Jacksonville" after informing authorities of the situation on Sunday. Jaylen Hill, 30, was caught on camera jumping off the side of the Carnival Elation on Sunday as it was heading toward its final stop in Jacksonville.

It typically sails from Jacksonville to the Bahamas for trips lasting 2-5 days, Carnival's website said. Coast Guard crews began searching, but the search was called off on Monday evening. His travel companion raised the alarm on Sunday afternoon when his disappearance was noticed. 'We were informed by the RBDF this evening that they were suspending the active search efforts pending further developments, and were not requesting further Coast Guard assistance after notifying the Robbins family. Cameron Robbins, 18, from Louisiana, US, jumped overboard without a life jacket while being urged on by his fellow classmates, according to eyewitnesses. Carnival Cruise Line said the ship was "advised to continue to Jacksonville" after informing authorities of the situation on Sunday.

'The Carnival Care Team is providing support to the guest's family and our thoughts are with them and the guest,' said a spokesman for Carnival, speaking to Fox Business. Carnival Cruise Line said the Elation was 'advised to continue to Jacksonville' after informing authorities of the situation on Sunday. The Carnival Elation vessel had just finished a four-day trip to the Bahamas, which ended in Jacksonville on Monday morning. However, on Monday night, a decision was made to call off the search "pending any further developments", the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard covered more than 1,374 miles while looking for the passenger after a 87ft Tarpon, a Hercules aircraft, and a Miami Ocean Sentry aircraft were dispatched to the scene. From 2009 to 2019, Cruise Lines International Association reported a total of 212 overboard cases.

A comprehensive search was immediately launched on board the ship, and security camera footage was thoroughly reviewed in an effort to ascertain the events leading up to Hill’s disappearance. Unfortunately, the ship’s authorities concluded that the missing guest had jumped overboard. ORLANDO, Fla. - The US Coast Guard has suspended the search for a man they said jumped overboard a Carnival cruise ship off the coast of Florida over the weekend. "We offer our deepest condolences to the Hill family," said Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez, D7. "Our crews take our life saving mission very seriously. Any time we can't bring a loved one home to their family is a pain we all feel."

Jaylen Hill was onboard Carnival Elation, scheduled on a four-day Bahamas cruise. On Sunday afternoon, the 30-year-old was captured in a surveillance video jumping over the railing. TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The U.S. Coast Guard said it has suspended the search for a missing man who went overboard on a Carnival Cruise ship just off the coast of Florida. MELBOURNE, Fla. (CBS12) — The United States Coast Guard (USCG) ended its search for a missing man who went overboard a cruise ship.

Jaylen was on the cruise with a "travel companion", when he jumped off, according to the cruise liner. The search for a missing Carnival Cruise passenger who jumped off the ship near Florida has been called off after less than 24 hours. Since 2022, there were a total of six passengers that went overboard on a Carnival Cruise Line ship. It was a case of a 35-year-old passenger who fell into the water after leaning over the railing of his stateroom balcony. The Elation sails between Jacksonville and the Bahamas on trips ranging from two to five days. It can carry nearly 2,200 passengers and 900 crew members, according to Carnival Cruise Lines.

The 2010 Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Law states that cruise ships need to have 42-inch guard rails and man-overboard detection systems. Unfortunately, not all cruise ships developed a reliable and automatic man-overboard detection system that uses thermal cameras and radars. On Monday night, the US Coast Guard ended its search for a passenger who jumped off a Carnival cruise ship. "We offer our deepest condolences to the Hill family," said Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez. "Our crews take our life-saving mission very seriously. Any time we can't bring a loved one home to their family is a pain we all feel." The Coast Guard began a search about 95 miles east of Melbourne, Florida, where the man went overboard, authorities said Monday.

"'Our Coast Guard command centre and aircrews based in Miami supported RBDF search and rescue efforts since the initial report Wednesday evening, and continued through Friday evening. A companion alerted cruise staff that Jaylen was missing as workers reviewed CCTV footage and determined he jumped overboard. There’s a law that requires ships to have the necessary safety precautions to avoid these incidences.

American Cruise Lines’ modern fleet of brand new contemporary riverboats and traditional paddlewheelers go even further, with cruises exploring the Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, each offering its own unique view of the American South and Midwest. In February 2017, Kevin Wellons, 24, of Georgia, was seen going overboard from the Carnival Elation. A commanding officer of the search and rescue crew, Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez, said they were saddened not to be able to find Hill's body.

The U.S. Coast Guard told the news station that it deployed two aircraft and a cutter to search for the man. The US Coast Guard has stopped its search for a 30-year-old male passenger who went overboard from the Carnival Elation cruise ship on Sunday. The incident occurred aboard the cruise ship Carnival Elation on Sunday morning. The ship was approximately 95 miles east of Melbourne, Florida, at the time of the incident. Carnival previously said the Elation crew was informed by Mr Hill’s travelling companion late on Sunday afternoon that he had not been seen all day.

The man was reported missing by his travel companion late Sunday afternoon after he was not seen all day. Any time we can’t bring a loved one home to their family is a pain we all feel,” Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez said in a statement. Described as the final update in the search, the USCG Southeast said District 7 suspended search efforts for 30-year-old Jaylen Hill pending any further developments. Hill was a passenger on the Carnival Elation cruise ship and went overboard Sunday approximately 95 miles east of Melbourne, Florida.

What Its Like To Cruise During A Hurricane Porthole Cruise and Travel

hurricane on cruise ship

If you see there's a hurricane churning toward the Caribbean a few days before your departure, you can't call your cruise line, cancel the trip and expect to get your money back. Virgin Islands (a common port on Eastern Caribbean sailings), for instance, is likely to have little or no impact on a Western Caribbean or Southern Caribbean sailing happening at that time. Although a cruise can be affected by a hurricane and need to make changes, the weather outside of those storms is often nice, hot and sunny. Now those are amazing places, and people book Canada/New England cruises all the time, but, if you were planning on Bermuda beaches, and end up at Peggy’s Cove…. In the recent past, we’ve seen cruises that were supposed to be going to Bermuda, have a itinerary change to avoid a storm.

Royal Caribbean Changes The Game With Muster 2.0

hurricane on cruise ship

Major cruise lines have adjusted plans due to Hurricane Ian, in some cases changing nearly entire itineraries or canceling sailings altogether. As The Points Guy notes, Atlantic Ocean hurricanes can develop at any time, but the majority occur between June and November, according to the National Hurricane Center. The good news is that you'll likely be able to stay ahead of the hurricane even if it occurs while you're on board. Cruise companies track weather carefully using satellites, maps, and predictive storm models through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

What it's like if your cruise is extended because of a hurricane?

The travel agent cancelled my cruise, my flights and my hotel booking on my behalf. Because I booked it as a package holiday, the ATOL scheme in the UK meant that I would not lose any money on the flights or hotel that I had booked. The average speed of a cruise ship is 23 mph, with maximum speeds reaching 34 mph.

What happens if my car is damaged in port while I'm at sea?

If a hurricane is headed for your departure port, you might have to decide whether to travel to the departure port (and possibly into a dangerous storm) or stay home and risk losing all the money you paid for the sailing. This happened in 2017 when some lines delayed departures out of Florida as Hurricane Irma approached. The lines that delayed departures allowed passengers to cancel for a refund in the form of a cruise credit.

In both cases, the issue was Port Canaveral closed and that prevented the ship from getting back into port. That isn't to say they've never done it, but time and time again, we see ships getting re-routed and extended instead. Sailings can be extended or shortened, but Royal Caribbean very rarely cancels an entire sailing.

Am I likely to get a deal during hurricane season?

Independence of the Seas' Friday voyage will now leave on Saturday, as well, and will not visit Perfect Day at CocoCay, but will stop in Nassau on Sunday as scheduled. Other major lines such as Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International have similarly altered itineraries as a result of Hurricane Ian. The spokesperson said Carnival Sunshine is now sailing on its next cruise.

And as you’re headed toward clearer skies, there are plenty of ways you and the whole family can enjoy yourselves—like watching jaw-dropping shows across air, water, ice and stage to roller skating, laser tag and bumper cars. Leading up to Hurricane Ian, the Florida ports of Key West, Tampa, Jacksonville, and Port Canaveral were shut down, leaving some ships at sea. Carnival similarly monitors weather conditions from its fleet operations center, which opened in 2018 at the company’s Miami headquarters and runs 24/7. He provides public reports on forecasts and conditions on his Instagram account.

The coasts of North and South Carolina could see "life-threatening storm-surge" Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center. The changes come after Hurricane Fiona disrupted cruise schedules, forcing Norwegian to reroute a cruise bound for Bermuda to Canada last week. RJ Whited posted a video on Facebook showing damage on the ship and the large waves hitting the vessel. "This was also around the time our internet went out, so we weren't able to look at the weather online, or contact anyone." "The sound of us crashing into the swells could be heard over the music playing" at the show he was at, he said. "Stage lights mounted on the ceiling began to shake, the disco ball started swinging and the LED wall on the stage… began rolling side by side on its own."

What happens if my flight is cancelled and I can't get to the port because of the storm?

You might think about avoiding booking a cruise during hurricane season, but the lower prices and demand might have you reconsidering. Carnival Elation also swapped its scheduled visit to Princess Cays for a day at sea Tuesday and visited Freeport in the Bahamas Wednesday in place of a planned sea day, during a sailing from Jacksonville. The ship, which had been scheduled to come back on Thursday, is set to dock in Jacksonville when the port reopens, which Lupoli said is expected to take place Saturday. While your ship can avoid the brunt of a storm, you shouldn’t assume you won’t feel some rocking and rolling. If you are cruising in hurricane season, it’s best to be prepared with a seasickness remedy.

No matter the weather that’s brewing, you can count on catching perfect waves on the FlowRider surf simulator and braving the tallest slide at sea when you’re on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Cruise ships easily travel from one place to the next, meaning they can conveniently ditch bad weather at a moment’s notice. Take it from James Van Fleet, Royal Caribbean’s chief meteorologist and the first in the cruise industry. He keeps an eye on our 25-plus ships and two private destinations around the clock, so that you can keep the good times rolling.

Ships sailing the Caribbean during hurricane season have an out -- they can move. Cruise ships have sophisticated technology onboard to monitor the weather. Plus, cruise lines can augment the information they have onboard with forecasts from weather assessment companies.

In the case of Disney Wish, the first announcement came on the evening of Sept. 27 as the storm moved closer to shore. Based on updated forecasts, the captain announced the ship would not return to port until Saturday or Sunday, after the storm had passed and they could better assess the situation at Port Canaveral. That meant passengers would remain on board one or two days longer than expected. For Disney Wish, a port change announcement came on the morning of Sept. 28 when the ship was scheduled to dock at Castaway Cay for the day.

Carnival cruise ship battered by waves in storm off Charleston

I hope this article has helped anyone whose cruise has been affected by a hurricane or who is concerned about cruising in hurricane season. This is just my experience of having a cruise booked with Royal Caribbean during Hurricane Dorian. This is one reason why being on a cruise ship during hurricane season might be safer than on land. If a cruise captain notices a hurricane obstructing their ship’s route, they can simply reroute away from the storm. If you're particularly prone to seasickness, hurricane season might not be the best time for you to cruise.

You may have heard or read that there were some cruises that were canceled in the wake of Hurricane Irma in 2017, but the fact is that it’s actually extremely rare for a cruise to be canceled during Caribbean hurricane season. While my cruise only had a change in itinerary, other cruise ships had to remain out at sea longer because of the closure in Port Canaveral. As anyone that deals with hurricanes a lot will tell you, the forecasts for tropical storms are quite variable and prone to changes that greatly benefit or penalize your situation. One day it might look like your ship will be clear of any issues, and the next, it looks like you're stuck. Some travel insurance policies offer cover for missed ports but check this carefully. If you’re only offered £25 per missed port, but your excess is £100, then this isn’t actually worth anything.

You aren't entitled to compensation for itinerary changes

Cruising during hurricane season is something thousands of cruisers do every year, and enjoy it! It’s important to remember that if there is an itinerary change, the cruise lines are doing this to keep everyone safe. Cruise lines will sometimes make a decision to make a cruise shorter, or even longer by adding days, to avoid bringing a cruise ship into a storm. Start monitoring tropical storm conditions a week before you leave by visiting Cruise Critic's Hurricane Zone or by watching weather reports. Be proactive if your cruise seems to be lying in the path of a storm by contacting your travel agent -- or the cruise line directly -- in case contingency plans are necessary.

Other Cruise Lines (Disney, Virgin, Norwegian)

The fine print in your cruise contract gives lines the right to substitute and/or eliminate ports if and when necessary. However, you may be entitled to refunds on prepaid port taxes or fees when ports are missed. Keep in mind that airports in these regions can also be affected by severe weather. Hurricanes in the Caribbean seasons are often easy to track, so finding a hurricane-free embarkation area should be simple.

Is the Air on a Cruise Ship Safe?

Cruise ships can easily avoid storms by sailing away from them and chasing better weather. As that announcement was made, audible cheers confirmed that most guests were thrilled that their vacation was just extended indefinitely. "The general sentiment is that people are content and happy about the extra day(s)," Roseboom said.

Carnival Cruise Line

Obviously if you are cruising to Alaska, the Mediterranean or somewhere else, this will not be an issue for you. After rapidly strengthening, Hurricane Idalia made landfall on the gulf coast of Florida this morning. Per the cruise contract that you agreed to when you booked the cruise, no compensation is required to be given if your itinerary changes. That means that if your cruise changes from an Eastern Caribbean cruise to a Western one, you will not be compensated for the change.

Expertly designed and rigorously tested features such as ship stabilizers allow cruises to safely sail through rougher weather. These stabilizers are so effective that, often, passengers onboard don’t even realize they’re sailing through rough water. These safety features and modern weather tracking technology make encountering a storm or hurricane during your cruise vacation extremely uncommon.

"Very active" hurricane season prediction for 2024

Itinerary changes are not uncommon, regardless of if it's hurricane season or not. Finally, you must get your travel insurance as soon as you book your cruise (or a year before you sail, whichever is sooner). If you wait until the last minute to buy your insurance and a hurricane is named before you buy it, you won’t be covered. Some travel insurance doesn’t cover cruises at all, so the first thing to check is that your policy includes ‘cruise cover’. Then you’ll want to check that hurricanes and other natural disasters are not excluded. However, if you’re happy to accept itinerary changes, and want great value for money, then a cruise in hurricane season is certainly worth considering.

Travel insurance policies also won't help if you cancel a cruise to avoid a storm — unless you've bought a pricey "cancel for any reason" policy. If you're flying to your cruise departure point, build in plenty of wiggle room in case air travel is affected by a big storm and flights are delayed. Your flight could be delayed by a storm that is far away from the destination where you are flying. During hurricane season, tropical storms moving through the Caribbean and into the Gulf of Mexico and up the East Coast of the U.S. can sometimes snarl air traffic across a wide swath of North America. Even during the busiest of hurricane seasons, there will be many weeks without a single tropical storm in the Caribbean or Bahamas. When a large storm does swirl through the Caribbean or Bahamas, it'll likely only affect a small portion of the region and, thus, only a small number of cruise ships.

The ship will now leave on Sunday, due to a port closure in Charleston, South Carolina, that has delayed its return. Passengers will "receive a one-day pro-rated refund of our cruise fare and a $50 onboard credit," and those who decide not to sail will get a full refund, according to Lupoli. "A lot of people have the perspective that we are safe and have much to be thankful for," she added. Crew and passenger safety is the reason cruise lines make the decision to stay at sea past the end of their scheduled itinerary. Yes, it can be inconvenient, but cruise lines do go out of their way to make the most of the experience for their guests, and safety is always the top priority.

Dedicated specialists are available 24/7 to work on your behalf should you experience a flight delay or interruption. They will work to get you on the next available flight so you can still get to your cruise ship on time, or get back home as quickly as possible if your return flight is affected. Look for policies that include coverage for trip interruptions or cancellations due to severe weather or a hurricane. Travel insurance policies should also offer medical coverage and non-medical evacuation. If a policy doesn’t include hurricane coverage, you may be able to add optional “cancel for any reason” coverage, but your best option is to purchase a policy that has specific hurricane coverage. Booking your Caribbean cruise vacation before peak time, say in June or July or at the end of November, is one way to cruise during hurricane season.

Major cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises, continuously monitor weather patterns around the world. The largest storms tend to hit the eastern Caribbean in August through October and the western Caribbean from September through November. These late summer and fall periods are also when you are likely to find some of the best cruise deals of the year. Unfortunately, you're pretty much out of luck if your car is damaged in a port parking lot while you're at sea. Many passengers experienced this very thing during Superstorm Sandy when they returned to find their cars parked in Brooklyn and Bayonne had been flooded or otherwise damaged. However, if you need to reschedule a flight and the airline has agreed to waive change fees -- or if a cruise is cut short by a day, but the line reimburses you for the missed day -- you won't get additional compensation payment.

Essentially, you can't expect every question you might have to be answered and you may have a sense of "que sera sera" as it pertains to going on the cruise. We made our decision to cruise based on the best information we had at the time we were to depart, and would trust in the cruise line to provide information and changes as needed. Once forecasters saw a hurricane was going to form, they produced an early track that seemed to put the storm in the way of our cruise. If you’ve enjoyed this or found it helpful, please don’t keep it to yourself ;-). Having a good attitude and trying to be flexible if there is a change, will help you to have the the very best cruise. This goes without saying, but keep informed so that you know if an itinerary change is likely.

We rarely felt much motion, and the sea conditions ended up being extremely calm. As you might imagine, having a cruise extended means logistical changes to get home. First time cruisers will often post on Facebook to ask if their cruise will be cancelled, and it's clear that it's very unlikely a cruise will be totally cancelled. There are some great deals to be had on cruises at this time of year, and, as it coincides with school summer holidays in the UK, it is generally a convenient time for families to cruise in the Caribbean. For Royal Caribbean cruises which are extended, no charge is made, and extras such as drinks packages, dining packages or WiFi packages will also be extended free of charge. In my case, the cancellation of my cruise meant that Royal Caribbean gave me a credit to use towards a future cruise in the next 12 months.
